Opti-EPA^™ is a very high potency marine lipid concentrate that provides twice the amount of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA per softgel than other fatty acid supplements. Opti-EPA^™ is strictly screened for toxic metals and chemicals, completely free of cholesterol, and carefully processed and handled to avoid oxidation.
One landmark study, the GISSI-Prevenzione Trial, showed supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids (in a ratio of DHA to EPA of approximately 2:1) significantly maintained cardiovascular function in adults. The exact reasons for this benefit may be related to the ability of fish oil to lower LDL and triglycerides, inhibit excessive platelet aggregation and reduce fibrinogen levels. Omega-3 fatty acids also support the body's normal inflammatory processes and cardiac health. Studies indicate that EPA and DHA act as precursors for the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins E1 and E3, and decrease the formation of pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2 and thromboxane A2. Scientists have also suggested that omega-3 fatty acids can have a direct cardiac effect - they may be able to modify sodium channels by binding to channel proteins, which could support healthy heart rhythms.
Brain function is also positively affected by omega-3 supplementation. DHA has been known to affect the central nervous system and may be involved in synaptic signal transduction. Adequate amounts of DHA are needed throughout adulthood for ongoing optimal function. Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential to the normal brain development of the newborn, especially during the last three months of pregnancy when brain development increases threefold.
