Bilberry fruit extract provides antioxidants and has been used to fight eye fatigue, reduce night blindness, slow down macular degeneration and cataract formation, and may also increase sharpness of vision. The bilberry fruit and plant has historical uses since the 16th century which is based on both the dried berries and leaves of this shrub. Modern interest stems in part from the fruit’s use by British pilots in World War II when pilots noticed night vision improvement after eating bilberry jam prior to night bombing raids. In the six-plus decades since, scientists have discovered that the bioflavonoids in bilberries are potent antioxidants. In Europe, where bilberry cultivation originated, bilberry extracts are a normal part of nutritional health care for the eyes. Bilberries have a higher concentration of an antioxidant called anthocyanin than other blue/purple berries. The fact that these berries had an impact on visual purple resulting in night vision acuity in pilots led to interest in more common vision problems such as macular degeneration and the effects of anythocyanins on eye conditions. Bilberries provide support for night vision by nourishing the visual purple component of the retina. Bilberries may also enhance capillary strength and help to normalize capillary permeability.

Goji has a nick name and is often referred to as the “happy berry”. Its scientific name is “Lycium Barbarum”. Goji berry use dates back to the legendary first emperor of China, Shen Nung. It has been included in one of the oldest known medical texts as a life-enhancing food. Goji fruit concentrate has 19 amino acids (building blocks of protein) including eight that are essential for life, and 21 trace minerals and antioxidants like carotenoids, beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. It also contains vitamin C, B-complex vitamins and vitamin E which are all used and are necessary for converting food into energy and protecting the body.
