Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an 8-carbon thioctic acid that is both water- and fat-soluble. It is naturally produced in small amounts in the liver and other tissues. Upon oral supplementation, ALA easily crosses the blood brain barrier and is distributed through the body via the portal vein and systemic circulation. Once in the tissues, it plays a crucial role as a coenzyme for the oxidation of pyruvate, alpha ketoglutarate, and branched-chain amino acids both inside and outside of cells, including within mitochondria.
The ability of alpha-lipoic acid to improve energy metabolism and decrease oxidative stress alludes to its ability to support healthy mitochondrial function with age.
