Genestra Col-sterol contains a blend of plant sterol esters, which can help reduce both total and LDL cholesterol levels. Plant sterols have a similar structure to cholesterol, but differ in their side chain groups. This leads to a continuous cycle of decreased absorption of dietary cholesterol, increased use of cholesterol for bile acid synthesis, decreased reabsorption of bile acids, and increased excretion of cholesterol in the feces. In a double blind, placebo-controlled study with 16 hypercholesterolemic adults, it was found that daily supplementation with 1.3 g sterol esters for four weeks resulted in a decrease of approximately 5% in total cholesterol and 4% in LDL levels.
