L-arginine is a semi-essential or conditionally essential amino acid in humans. It is one of the most metabolically versatile amino acids and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of urea, nitric oxide (NO), polyamines, proline, glutamate, creatine, and agmatine. L-arginine is known for its physiological effects including the release of growth hormones, glucagon and insulin, amino acid detoxification and for the synthesis of creatine which is an important compound for generating ATP.
L-arginine has been used for treating male infertility by improving spermatogenesis. Since L-arginine is a precursor of NO, and NO is a potent vasodilator, it is possible that arginine would be beneficial in erectile dysfunction much like the mechanism of action of some well-known drugs.
Supplementing with L-arginine is most commonly used to enhance exercise capacity and to improve nitric oxide production (NO) in cardiovascular disorders, and for erectile dysfunction.
For individuals with cardiovasular concerns, they can benefit from an increased intake of L-arginine, which causes vasodilation and relaxation of the muscle.
